Getting Started

Welcome to Lume. This guide walks you through the initial setup and your first monthly review.

1. Download and open Lume

Download Lume from the Mac App Store and open it. No sign-up or account is required — the app is ready to use immediately.

2. Configure your FIRE targets

Before logging your first month, set your targets in Settings → FIRE Targets:

  • Annual expenses — your estimated spending in retirement
  • Safe withdrawal rate — typically 3–4%
  • Passive income — any income you expect in retirement (rental, dividends, etc.)

Lume uses these to calculate your Survival coverage, FIRE, and Passive Freedom milestones.

3. Add your accounts

Go to Accounts and add the accounts you want to track:

  • Bank accounts and cash
  • Investment portfolios (stocks, ETFs, crypto)
  • Real estate and other assets
  • Liabilities (mortgage, loans)

For investment accounts, enter your holdings by ticker symbol and Lume will fetch live prices automatically.

4. Run your first monthly review

Tap Start Review and follow the 5-step wizard:

  1. Income — total income received this month
  2. Expenses — total spending this month
  3. Account balances — update each account to its current value
  4. Review — check the summary and make any corrections
  5. Confirm — save the month

That’s it. Lume will now show your net worth history, savings rate trend, and FIRE progress.

5. Keep it up monthly

The key to useful data is consistency. Set a reminder on the first of each month to run through the 5-minute review. Over time, you’ll build a clear picture of your financial trajectory.
